I’ve wanted to visit Norway’s Lofoten Islands for years. Jagged peaks rising straight out of the sea, dramatic landscapes, and the general appeal of skiing somewhere that looks like it belongs on the cover of an adventure magazine. This year, we decided to go. A group of us, led by our Norwegian friend and her partner (a mountain guide, conveniently), had a full week to explore. The only catch was the weather, which, in classic coastal Norway fashion, looked completely uncooperative.
Day one was a total write-off. We optimistically set out for a run, made it exactly 3 km before getting sandblasted by high winds, and decided we weren’t that desperate for exercise. A strong start. But then, overnight, the weather did something unexpected—it improved. We woke up to blue skies, 10 cm of fresh snow, and barely a whisper of wind. Lofoten had decided to be hospitable, at least for the moment.
We took the guidebook’s advice and aimed for Laupstad, where two relatively easy summits promised a good warm-up. I liked it immediately. Unlike the Alps, where established skin tracks tend to funnel you into an obvious route, here we had to figure things out for ourselves. The first 200 meters involved bushwhacking through shrubs, balancing over half-frozen streams, and generally pretending we knew what we were doing. It felt like earning our turns, or at least that’s what I told myself.
The first peak, Pilan, was straightforward enough. We reached the col, swapped skis for crampons, and scrambled up a ridge to the summit. The views? Snow-covered peaks plunging straight into the fjords, classic Lofoten. The ski down was actually enjoyable—fresh snow on a solid base, a rare combination this season. So far, Lofoten was outperforming the Alps.
A quick skin up to the second summit, Sautind, gave us more of the same: nice skiing, no crowds, and a descent that took us nearly to sea level. Not a bad introduction to Norwegian ski touring. If the weather held, this could turn into a great trip. If not, well, we’d already learned that Lofoten had no problem keeping us on our toes.
